Many patients come to my office looking to improve their facial aesthetics. A major area for rejuvenation is the eyelids. Heavy upper eyelids and lower eyelid bags make us look tired and are associated with advancing age. As a result, Blepharoplasty, the eyelid lift, is one of the most popular cosmetic plastic surgeries year after year. What is an Eyelid Lift, and what can it do for you?

What is an Eyelid Lift?

The Eyelid Lift is a short outpatient surgery that can provide a more refreshed appearance. By removing excess upper eyelid skin, a more open, alert appearance is created. In addition, disproportionate fat is removed from the lower eyelids, reducing under eye bags and the tired appearance they create.

Blepharoplasty can often be performed with just local anesthesia for the properly selected patients. Upper and lower eyelid surgery can be performed separately or together, when indicated. Below we discuss the options.

Quad Blepharoplasty – Upper and Lower Eyelids

Upper and lower eyelids often “age” at the same rate. As a result, many patients ask to do the upper and lower eyelid surgeries together. This is referred to as a Quad Bleph, short for Quad Blepharoplasty, because all four eyelids are addressed. The advantage is two surgeries with one recovery period. Additionally, when both eyelids have a tired appearance, rejuvenating them together helps to maintain facial proportions and harmony.

Upper and Lower Eyelid Lifts can be combined for a Quad Blepharoplasty to rejuvenate the upper and lower eyelids together and maintain eyelid harmony.

The patient above had hooded upper eyelids and lower eyelid bags, as evidenced in the before picture on the left. After Blepharoplasty, the weight of the redundant upper eyelid skin is gone revealing more of the eye and a more alert appearance. As an extra bonus, after her eyelid lift she can again wear eye makeup. If your upper eyelids rub your eye makeup off, Upper Blepharoplasty may help.

Upper Blepharoplasty – Upper Eyelids

Sometimes, the lower eyelids remain smooth, but the upper eyelids are droopy. By removing redundant upper eyelid skin, the tired look can be changed into a more alert, attentive appearance. In addition, the upper and lower eyelids are balanced and match again. When the lower eyelids are aging first, a lower lid lift can be performed instead.

Upper eyelid lift, aka upper blepharoplasty, can reduce heavy upper eyelids and reduce the tired appearance they cause. It may also increase your field of vision.

The above patient’s upper eyelid was MIA before surgery. She was often asked if she was tired, and wearing eye makeup was not an option. After her Upper Eyelid Lift, the lid margin is visible. She looks awake, and her peripheral vision has improved.

Lower Blepharoplasty – Lower Eyelids

Sometimes the upper eyelids are good, but the lower eyelids are baggy. This is often genetic, and can occur in younger patients. Even when well rested, patients may be asked if they were up late. In cases when the lower eyelid tone is good, fat can be removed via a hidden incision placed inside the eyelid. Removing the fat smooths the lower lid.

Lower eyelid lifts “unstuff” the lower eyelid bags. Lower blepharoplasty, like upper blepharoplasty, also reduces a tired appearance by smoothing the appearance of the lower lids.

For the patient above, excess fat was removed with a Lower Blepharoplasty. The result is smooth lower eyelids and a well rested appearance.
