Like most plastic surgeons, the majority of my patients are women; however, I perform a variety of surgical procedures on men every week. Today’s post addresses Gynecomastia Reduction with some photos of actual patients who sought treatment in my Walnut Creek, CA, plastic surgery clinic.
According to The Aesthetic Society, in 2022 the most common procedures for men in the US were:
- Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction) – 21,358
- Liposuction – 19,593
- Blepharoplasty (Eyelid) – 11,277
- Rhinoplasty (Nose) – 6,536
- Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) – 4,771
And according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery over 300,000 Gynecomastia Reductions were performed world wide in 2022.
Gynecomastia is an over development of the male breast tissue. While the disproportionate fullness can be a source of embarrassment, Gynecomastia Reduction can provide relief.
Male Breast Reduction Surgery
Gynecomastia Reduction is a short, outpatient procedure designed to masculinize the male chest. In its simplest form, male breast reduction is the removal of disproportionate tissue between the chest muscle and the chest skin.
The majority of this glandular tissue is located under the nipple; however, disproportionate fat can add to the volume and fill the lower chest and extend to the sides.
Gynecomastia Reduction does not remove muscle. It simply removes disproportionate fat and breast tissue to reveal the shape of the chest muscle. In response to the removal, the areolae often shrink as is demonstrated in these male breast reduction before and after photos.
The Gynecomastia Before and After Photos above demonstrate the reduction of the excess tissue of the lower chest. A combination of Liposuction and direct excision of the gland was used to smooth the chest and reveal the contour of pectoralis muscle.
Puffy Nipple Reduction Surgery
In patients with little chest fat the glandular tissue is more distinct. This is referred to as “Puffy Nipples” and is shown in the puffy nipple reduction before and after pictures below.
Puffy nipples are caused by disproportionate growth of the mammary gland beneath the nipple. The result is a herniation of tissue into the areola and a prominent lump rising from the chest muscle.
For men with this variation of Gynecomastia, the gland can be removed directly without the need for Liposuction. On the other hand, men with disproportionate fat, who do not have glandular hypertrophy, can be treated with Liposuction alone. For most men, man boobs are caused by a combination of gland and fat, so a combination of excision and liposuction are used during a Gynecomastia Reduction Surgery.
