Muffin Tops

One muffin top leads to another.

Today’s blog post was inspired by a controversial Liposuction advertisement I saw online today. The MLive article featured a Michican Plastic Surgeon’s billboard with the above Muffin Tops. The ad received mixed reviews due to its not so subtle caption: “Friends don’t let friends muffin top.” While eye-catching, mildly clever and for some humorous, the caption is missing one of the most important aspects of plastic surgery. We don’t have plastic surgery for our friends. We have plastic surgery for ourselves.

Seriously What Muffin Top Are You Talking About?

Out of tight low-rise jeans this muffin top may seem subtle, but Liposuction makes her curves even more shapely.

The Problem: Sometimes, just a small amount of fat in the wrong place causes a Muffin Top. The woman above is by no measure overweight; however, the small amount of fat she does have is placed directly above the top of her favorite jeans. The result: a Muffin Top, a roll of skin and fat that bulges over the top of the pants like the top of muffin bulges over its cup when baked.

The Solution: For this healthy young woman more exercise and dieting won’t help. She is already at her ideal weight. Further weight loss would eventually reduce her muffin top, but it would also make the rest of her body look too thin and malnourished. Being young, healthy and near her ideal weight, she is an ideal candidate for Liposuction. The procedure is performed as an outpatient, with a few days of discomfort and a few weeks of wearing a light compression garment. The result is spot removal of the problem area, and a quick reunion with her favorite jeans.

Liposuction of the Back Can Reduce the Muffin Top

Liposuction removes excess fat from the bra-line, lower back and upper buttocks, and another Muffin Top is reduced.

As long as the skin is tight, larger collections of fat can be addressed with Liposuction. Above, excess fat was removed from the bra-line, lower back, sides and upper buttocks. Sometimes this is referred to as Liposculpture, as the shape of the body is sculpted. By aggressively removing fat from the waist, and leaving some fat at the hips, and hour-glass shape is created for a feminine shape. Aggressive liposuction of the hip area creates a more masculine shape, but we will address Male Muffin Tops in the next post.

When the skin is loose, a back lift, or lower body lift is needed to remove the skin excess. Loose inelastic skin will just fold more, like an empty ballon, if Liposuction alone is performed. When insufficient volume is present, fat can also be transferred to add volume. Fat Grafting is most often done to increase the roundness of the buttocks during a Brazilian Butt Lift.
