The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has just released their 2024 procedural stats.
Every year the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) publishes their procedural statistics. This year, 2024, the numbers are up again. All procedures by ASPS members show modest increases of up to 3%.
What is the American Society of Plastic Surgeons?
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), a nonprofit organization, supports its members in their efforts to provide the highest quality patient care through education, research and advocacy.
It is the largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world. With more than 9,000 members across the globe, the Society is recognized as a leading authority and information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.
The Top Cosmetic Surgical Procedures in 2024
The top five cosmetic plastic surgeries of 2024 are the usual suspects.
These procedures are the most requested cosmetic surgeries year after year, In 2024, they were requested a little more. If you would like more information on any of these, just click on the procedures listed above.
Below, I breakdown the 2024 plastic surgery stats by areas: Breast, Body and Face. I have included details like the numbers performed and the percentage change compared to 2023.
2024 Cosmetic Breast Procedures
Despite what you may read elsewhere on the Internet, ASPS members performed more breast procedures in 2024.
Reports of the decline of Breast Augmentation are greatly exaggerated. Breast Implants are the most frequently used cosmetic implants, and Breast Augmentation remains the most frequently requested breast enhancement. From 2023 to 2024 the number of Breast Augmentations and Revisions increased 1%.
Breast Lifts, often performed in conjunction with Breast Augmentation and Breast Augmentation Revision were number two. Breast Reduction and Breast Implant Removal were third and fourth respectively. The fifth most common breast procedure was Gynecomastia Reduction or male breast reduction, which was up 2%.
2024 Cosmetic Body Procedures
All cosmetic body procedures were also increased in 2024.
Liposuction led all procedures in 2024, so it was the most popular body sculpting procedure. In fact, twice as many Liposuctions were performed compared to the second most popular body shaping procedure: Abdominoplasty.
To be fair though, Liposuction is frequently combined with the Tummy Tuck to smooth out the hips and lower back, maintaining the aesthetic proportions of the trunk. Liposuction is also needed for the third most popular body shaping surgery, Buttock Augmentation. The vast majority of Buttocks Augmentation is performed with a BBL, while buttocks implants account for only 4%. Lower Body Lifts and Labiaplasty round out the 2024 top five body shaping procedures.
2024 Cosmetic Face Procedures
All cosmetic procedures of the face also increased in 2024.
The number one facial plastic surgery for 2024 was Blepharoplasty. The eyelid lift is used to remove excess skin from the upper eyelids and bags from beneath the lower eyelids. The Facelift was the second most commonly performed facial plastic surgery, followed by Rhinoplasty (nose job), facial fat grafting and liposuction of the neck. The total at the bottom of the face procedures chart is the total of all procedures, breast, body and face.
2024 Noninvasive Cosmetic Procedures
Minimally invasive procedures also gained ground in 2024, with the glaring exception of noninvasive fat reduction which was down a whopping 40%
While over one and one half million cosmetic surgeries were performed in 2024, up 1%, these numbers are dwarfed by the number of minimally invasive procedures performed. In 2024 28.2 million noninvasive procedures were performed, up 1.5% from 2023.
The most frequently performed minimally invasive procedure was neuromodulator injection (Botox, Dysport…). At 9.9 million, this is up 4% since last year. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers were number two at about 7 million when you combine lip augmentation and rhytid treatments. Skin resurfacing (chemical peels, dermabrasion) and Laser treatments were third and fourth. Non HA fillers were the fifth most popular.
A huge reduction in noninvasive fat reduction was seen in 2024, down 40% compared to 2023. Coolsculpting®, Liposonix®, Emsculpt®, Vanquish®, Zerona®, Kybella® all fell out of favor from a combination of overpromising and underdelivering. Some have claimed this is due to the popularity of weight loss with GLP-1s; however, Liposuction demand maintained its popularity and some.
