Celebrating my 25th anniversary as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
For over 100 years, the American College of Surgeons has been a leader in surgical education and research. I am proud to celebrate my 25th year as a fellow.
Who is the American College of Surgeons?
From the beginning, the College has been involved in surgical education and research, patient welfare, hospital standardization, ethics of practice, and collaboration with other medical associations. That heritage continues today.
The ACS was an outgrowth of the Clinical Congresses of Surgeons of North America. These annual symposiums started in 1910 to further the education of practicing surgeons. The Clinical Congresses were themselves an outgrowth of the journal Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, another initiative of ACS Founder Dr. Franklin H. Martin.
The American College of Surgeons has over 90,000 members in 144 countries around the globe. Over 2,500 hospitals participate in ACS quality assurance programs, designed to enhance patient care and safety. In addition, the college offers over 400 educational courses and sessions each year.
American College of Surgeons Fellowship Pledge
ACS Fellows must take the American College of Surgeons Fellowship Pledge. It reads as follows:
- Recognizing that the American College of Surgeons seeks to exemplify and develop the highest traditions of our ancient profession, I hereby pledge myself, as a condition of Fellowship in the College, to live in strict accordance with the College’s principles and regulations.
- I pledge to pursue the practice of surgery with honesty and to place the welfare and the rights of my patient above all else. I promise to deal with each patient as I would wish to be dealt with if I were in the patient’s position, and I will respect the patient’s autonomy and individuality.
- I further pledge to affirm and support the social contract of the surgical profession with my community and society.
- I will take no part in any arrangement or improper financial dealings that induce referral, treatment, or withholding of treatment for reasons other than the patient’s welfare.
- Upon my honor, I declare that I will advance my knowledge and skills, will respect my colleagues, and will seek their counsel when in doubt about my own abilities. In turn, I will willingly help my colleagues when requested.
- I recognize the interdependency of all health care professionals and will treat each with respect and consideration.
American College of Surgeons 2000 Convocation
I officially became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) at the American College of Surgeons 2000 convocation in Chicago on October 26. (Click to see the Convocation Program.)
I was accepted as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 2000. That year the convocation was held in Chicago on October 26th. To view the full program, and list of initiates, click the image above. Acceptance means that a surgeon can use FACS in their title.
