Facial Plastic Surgery is designed to provide you with a more rested and youthful appearance. Blepharoplasty, or the Eyelid Lift, can do this and more.

Blepharoplasty on KRON 4 Body Beautiful in San Francisco

I recently had the opportunity to discuss Blepharoplasty with Bay Area New Station anchor Janelle Marie. The show, entitled Body Beautiful, aired live on KRON 4 last month. We discussed many of the details of eyelid aging, and how to fix it. The information on the video is supplemented below and on my main web site with more general information. If you are considering eyelid surgery, the best thing to do is visit an experienced Board Certified Plastic Surgeon near you, so that the details are covered too.

Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty) Video Presentation

Eyelid Lift Before and After Photos

If you already watched the video, you may have noticed the usual Before and After Pictures were missing. This Body Beautiful show was the last live broadcast from the old San Francisco Van Ness Avenue Studios. Maybe it was the studio ghosts way of saying she’ll miss us, but just before going live, the video editor ate the before and after pictures. You can see them here on the San Francisco Plastic Surgery Blog in my post from earlier this month: All Eyes on You – SF Bay Area Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty), or visit the DrMele.com Plastic Surgery Photo Gallery.

What Happens to the Eyelids?

The Eyelids aging is due to intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The Intrinsic Factors we are born with. For example, the eyelids have the thinest skin on the body, and they move a lot. The amount of fat around the eyes is also genetic. Thicker, elastic skin and the proper amount of eyelid fat, contribute to the appearance of fewer wrinkles and smaller bags.

Extrinsic Factors are the environmental influences that change the appearance of our eyelids. Sun exposure and smoking are two areas over which we have some control. Using sunscreen, hats and moisturizers can protect the eyelid skin, prolong a youthful appearance and prevent skin cancer. Not smoking is good idea for many reasons.

How Blepharoplasty Works

Blepharoplasty is a facial plastic surgery procedure that literally means eyelid changing. Though both the upper and lower eyelids can have excess skin and fat, the most common problems corrected are excess skin of the upper eyelid and bulging fat bags of the lower eyelids. Both these features make us look older and tired.

Upper Eyelid Lifts

The Upper Blepharoplasty can be performed for both cosmetic and functional reasons. Sometimes, insurance will cover upper eyelid surgery when the excess skin is blocking your vision. Each insurance company has its own rules defining what is cosmetic and what is covered, so it is important to check with your insurance before having the surgery if your vision is compromised.

Lower Eyelid Lifts

The Lower Blepharoplasty is used to remove bags from under the eyes. Excess fat and skin are removed, and the eyelid is tightened. Fine lines can also be treated with chemical peels or laser skin resurfacing.

Eyelid Rejuvenation Consultations

As mentioned above, the best, if not the only way to find out if Blepharoplasty is right for you is via an in-person consultation appointment. A brief history and physical examination is necessary to be certain the procedure is appropriate for you.
