The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) held its 2014 meeting in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area last weekend. Plastic Surgeons from around the world came to learn the latest innovations in Cosmetic Plastic Surgery. Blending science and art is not always easy, but that was the emphasis of this year’s annual meeting of the world’s premier society dedicated to Cosmetic Plastic Surgery.

What is the ASAPS?

The ASAPS was founded in 1967 by Board Certified Plastic Surgeons dedicated to the cosmetic side of plastic surgery. At that time, Cosmetic Plastic Surgery was not as well embraced by the mainstream Plastic Surgery Societies, and there was a need for Cosmetic Plastic Surgeons to have a society of their own to further cosmetic plastic surgery education and research. The annual meeting is a cooperative effort between the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation, both of whom I am proud to support.

ASAPS Goals

The ASAPS has four main goals: Patient Advocacy, Public Education, Professional Education and Research. By promoting the highest levels of patient safety, standards and ethics, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery makes plastic surgery safer and more predictable for all of us.

Member plastic surgeons are required to be Board Certified Plastic Surgeons, actively practice cosmetic plastic surgery, participate in ongoing continuing medical education above that required for licensure, and adhere to a Code of Ethics that exceeds those required by state medical boards. San Francisco Bay Area Plastic Surgery

The San Francisco Bay Area has always been a center for innovation in Plastic Surgery, but what is unique about the ASAPS is the number in international members, and the innovations they bring that are specific to ethnic procedures. The international flavor of the Bay Area makes Plastic Surgeons here acutely aware of these differences, and requires us to be accepting of techniques uniquely geared to the natural variations in both appearance and anatomy.
